Meet Tweek-Our CH Kitty!

Hey guys! I just wanted to take some time to introduce you to our CH cat, Tweek. For those of you who do not know what CH is, you’ve come to the right place. CH is short for Cerebellar Hypoplasia which is a non-progressive disorder that often affects kittens whose mothers have contracted the panleukopenia virus during pregnancy. CH results when the cerebellum is not mature at birth and since the cerebellum affects motor coordination, affected cats and dogs can have varying levels of difficult with balance. Cats and dogs with CH may have trouble walking and some cats with CH may not be able to walk at all. CH can be mild, moderate, or severe.

There are many misconceptions about animals with CH, but I am here to clear the air on some of them:

  • Animals with CH are not in pain
  • It is not progressive or contagious
  • They live a normal, happy life span
  • They can be fixed
  • They learn to adapt to their condition

Tweek is a very special kitty to our family. He was our first adopted special needs animal and so has taught us all about the joys, trials, and tribulations of owning a special needs animal. Sometimes owning a special needs pet can be a lot of work, but at the end of the day it is always worth it.

There is something special about a special needs cat. Their love for their humans is a different kind of love. They rely on you in different ways than your other pets do. They need you more and so your bond with them is often stronger because of it.

Tweek has also taught everyone in our family a lot about life. It is truly something amazing when you watch Tweek move around the house. Even though he is slower than our other cats and sometimes he struggles, he always manages to find a way around every obstacle in his path. He lets nothing get is his way. He is the most determined cat I have ever met.

Tweek will always hold a special place in my heart.  No matter how many times he falls down, he always gets back up. I know that if Tweek the CH kitty can get back up after every fall than so can I.
